Bring Up The Bodies
Author: Hilary Mantel RRP: £20.00 Publisher: Fourth Estate
The sequel to the utterly brilliant Booker prize winning Wolf Hall. Following his rise and rise, Bring Up the Bodies follows Thomas Cromwell, now Henry VIII’s principal secretary and chief minister, from September 1535 through to the Summer of 1536. Hilary Mantel vividly captures this period of Henry VIII’s life when he wished to be rid of Anne Boleyn, who had not given him the son and heir he needed, and has instead set his eye on Jane Seymour. Richly observed, the true character of Thomas Cromwell, his ambition and the extent of his wheeling and dealing is fully exposed. Maybe not quite the book Wolf Hall is, but nevertheless it’s not too far behind!
